Update

Hi - just a quick update here. My fees have now increased to £15 per half hour lesson, which is still pretty competetive compared to other teachers locally.  I have also increased my teaching hours meaning I do have a few extra vacancies coming up.  I have recently introduced the Trinity-Guildhall music syllabus along with the one from the ABRSM.  This just gives a little more flexibility in the approach exams and allows students to develop their own style and tastes accordingly. I am now also able to offer lessons in the theory of music up to and including that essential grade 5. - please contact me for further details.

Hi, and welcome to my site. This is a chance for you to get to know a little more about me in case you are considering undertaking some private tution.

Background:

Piano

I have been giving piano lessons since 1985, and have consequently accrued an enormous amount of experience of a large variety of students. I specialise in teaching absolute beginners from the age of 7 onwards. Sometimes I am asked to take on a child approaching 7, which I will consider - depending on the child. The reason I say 7 is because the student needs to be able to sit and concentrate for a full half an hour during their lesson, and then commit to a small amount of practise EVERY DAY during the following weeks. In my experience children younger than this have difficulty in achieving this: they simply find it too hard which can then of course put them off for life.

I also take on more mature beginners and have had several students over the years who have been enjoying some free time in their retirement. At this stage in life some people believe it is too late for their poor old brains to attempt anything so new and complicated! - however, with the luxury of time to practise it is possible to achieve great results.

My teaching is not just restricted to beginners. I am happy to consider students who have moved from other teachers and have achieved a standard up to grade three. As I have chosen to specialise in beginners I find that whilst I can help a student work towards grade 5 it is at this point that I encourage them to move on to someone else who specialises in the intermediary stages of teaching piano.

I use the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Scholls of Music) system of examinations should my students wish to pursue exams. I believe that whilst the exams are a useful tool and incentive for certain students, they can be exceedingly detrimental to others. Therefore, whilst I am happy to put forward suitable candidates, I never push students into doing exams.

The lessons are fun and informal with a successful balance of friendliness and firmness and I employ fairly traditional methods, generally using a combination of classical and modern/jazz/pop music. If the student has something they particularly want to learn to play I can usually draft something out for them or adapt more difficult music to suit their own particular standard and style.

English/Study Skills

I have recently undertaken a further 4 years of training to achieve my PGCE/PCET (Post Graduate Certificate in Education/Post Compulsory Education and Training.) This means I am now qualified to teach anyone past the age of compulsory education. During my training I have had experience in teaching English at GCSE, A/S and A2 levels, and am now able to offer extra support to those wishing to pursue it - particularly those attemting re-sits.

I am also experienced in teaching mature students in both English and in Study Skills. I went back into education as a mature student and I know from personal experience that one of the most tricky things to face is the act of actually writing an essay again! Therefore, Study Skills, an important and often overlooked aspect of returning to education, can also be developed through personal tuition.

Piano fees are currently £12.50 per half hour lesson whilst English and Study Skills fees are variable.

If you feel you might like to discuss any of the above then please do get in touch.
